I threw the bathroom out with the bathwater…
Ok let’s recap and do some Alex math.
Mike goes on business trip + Alex left alone to her own devices = bathroom makeover amazingness.
Now I will admit, maybe I was a bit over the top with stripes as the main theme, but this house needed a bit of a pick me up.
I had three days to pull this off… let’s just say it took a tad bit longer to complete than anticipated … Mikey came home and hung the shelves! yay!
I couldn’t have done this project alone, so I called in the reinforcements… my parents. YAY! I did all the painting; they helped me with a few of the details – installing the shelf over the sink and helping with some of the finishing touches.
The original vanity was white, and I had planned on leaving it as is… but … I changed my mind. I soon found myself taking off the doors and unscrewing the hardware. After a good cleaning, sanding and priming, I rolled on the grey. *SWOON* love at first sight!
With a spiffy new bathroom, it needed a spiffy new window treatment. This was a long process for me… a debate if you will.
I randomly found some fabric I purchased years ago from Fabricland, it was like finding buried treasure! I love the pattern, and how it still lets light through (it’s linen with a velvety grey design) I measured my window, cut my fabric and sewed, sewed, sewed. I suspended it within the window using a tension rod. I think the mix of fabric is fun between it and the shower curtain, no matchy-matchy in this house.
While I was in here, I gave the medicine cabinet a good scrub; … and then I started organizing, and organizing, and some more organizing. I was tired of all those stupid cardboard boxes falling out at me whenever I opened the door. You know the ones, band-aid boxes, cold and flu medication boxes… Blah! Enough was enough.
One of my last posts I was trying to find a use for my Blue Ball Mason Jars, and Voilà! instant medicine cabinet storage.
I also realized quickly that older homes don’t offer a lot of storage for linens and towels. I was perusing Homesense one day and a fab magazine rack jumped out at me, and it spoke: “TOWEL STORAGE, BUY ME! BUY ME NOW!” (Don’t you hate when inanimate objects, such as shoes, beg you to bring them home?).
I took it home and spray painted it white (originally brown). I was initially going to hang this on the wall behind the door, and sadly realized it could not be done (outlets and a vent).
I was a sad panda for a few days until my dad came over and said “Al, why don’t you hang it on the back of the door?” *DING, DING, DING, DING, DING!* We have a winner!
Overall this was a super fun project, but I don’t recommend jumping into this with multiple people in the house and it being your sole bathroom.
This style may not be your cup of tea, that’s ok. I think this bathroom has a ton of personality, I hope I’ve inspired you to jazz up your own sal de bain.
